FC St. Pauli suffered a bitter defeat against SC Freiburg on Sunday evening. After six home games without a loss, the Bundesliga club lost 1-2. Former St. Pauli striker Igor Matanovic became the match-winner for Freiburg with a brace. With a win, coach Alexander Blessin's team could have increased their lead over the direct relegation spots to six points. Instead, St. Pauli now sits in the relegation zone, just three points ahead of VfL Wolfsburg. In an interview, defender Hauke Wahl stated that the team was unable to press high in the second half, contributing to the loss. St. Pauli started the match energetically and took the lead through Danel Sinani in the 24th minute. However, Freiburg came back strong and scored the equalizer and the decisive goal in the second half. The Bundesliga will pause next weekend due to international matches before St. Pauli plays against Union Berlin on April 5.
