On the eve of the season start in the 2. Bundesliga, FC St. Pauli signed the 21-year-old Icelandic player Gisli Thordarson, who previously played for the Polish champions Lech Poznań until last season's final matchday. The two clubs agreed on a loan with an option to buy, as the club announced before their first game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth (Sunday at 13:00/Sky).
Standing at 1.91 meters tall, Thordarson is expected to play in central and defensive midfield positions. He was trained in Breidablik and FC Bologna. With Vikingur Reykjavik, he won the Icelandic championship twice and the cup.
"Gisli has already accumulated some experience in his young years, also internationally. He is a physically robust midfielder who intelligently recognizes spaces and acts both with and against the ball," said Sport Chief Andreas Bornemann. "Furthermore, we see further development potential in him."
The signing of the Icelandic player underscores FC St. Pauli's ambitions to establish themselves in the 2. Bundesliga and continue on their path towards the top flight.
